          COURSE OVERVIEW

This is a lecture and discussion course with an interdisciplinary approach drawing from the fields of sociology, anthropology, law, psychology, and women’s studies. Sexual violence is explored as a continuum of attitudes and behaviors that are integral to our society, which serves to enforce societally proscribed gender norms. We will examine and critique competing theories of sexual violence, and will survey various forms of sexual violence, including rape, sexual harassment, male-on-male sexual assault, and child sexual abuse. We will also investigate the “moral panic” surrounding child molesters, “sexually violent predators,” “sexual slavery,” and other contemporary issues.
